RECORD COMPUTER SCREEN IN WINDOWS 10

There are three methods to record computer screen like Using Screen Recorder, Using Third-Party Programs and Using Sharing the Video Community.

Recording our screen can be incredibly useful, whether we are getting technical support or just showing off something cool to our friends and family. There are several programs available for Windows 7 that will allow us to do this, with varying degrees of functionality.

Method 1: Using Screen Recorder

  • Download the “Screen Recorder” utility from Microsoft. This program is available as a free download from TechNet magazine website. Once on the utility Spotlight page, find and click the link following code download available at: and save the file to link.
  • Install “Screen Recorder

UtilityOnlineMarch092009_03.exe” files to unpack the installation files. We will be asked for a destination that we want to place the files. Designate somewhere that we can access easily. We can delete these files once installation is complete.

Navigate to the location where we unpacked the files. We will see two folders: 32-bit and 64-bit. Open the one that corresponds to our operating system.

Run the “Screen Recorder” program. This will prompt us to install Windows Media Encoder 9. Follow the prompts to install Media Encoder 9.

Run the “Screen Recorder” program again. This time, the Screen Recorder installation will begin. Follow the prompts to install Screen Recorder in its default location.

  • Open Screen Recorder. After installation is complete, a shortcut for Screen Recorder will appear on our desktop. Double-click it to start the program. The Screen Recorder control panel will appear, as well as a screen with a few tips.
  • Select what element we want to record. In the dropdown menu, we can select to either record “Full Screen” or we can choose a specific window that we want to record. All of our active windows will appear in the drop-down menu. If we are trying to record Google Chrome and Chrome is not on the list, we have Google Hangouts open, close Hangouts as it hides the Chrome window from the list. Then, restart “Screen Recorder”.
  • Choose whether we want to record our voice. If we have a microphone plugged in, we can check the Audio box to enable audio recording along with the video capture. This will allow us to narrate what we are doing in the video.

Screen Recorder uses our default Windows settings for audio input. That means that if we need to change levels, we can adjust it through the Volume button in the System Tray.

  • Decide if we want the border of our window to flash. This is a tool to help us see which window we are recording. The flashing border will not appear in the recorded video but is simply a tool to help us keep focus.
  • Specify the file location. Once we have our recorder configured, click “OK” to open the recording tool. Before we can begin recording, we will need to specify where we want to save the video and what it should be called. Click the button at the top of the tool to set the location and name.

Screen Recorder records in the WMV format. Remember that the resulting recording will be low quality.

  • Start recording. We can click the “Green Start” button to begin recording, the “Yellow Pause” button to pause recording, and the “Red Stop” button to complete recording and output it to the file that we specified.

Hi, Krishna. Very informative! Thanks for showing clearly how to record computer screen. I’d also recommend Acethinker Screen Recorder which I have been using for many years. It’s a free web-based application to record computer screen right from the browser, share it here as an alternative method.
